New Eastwood High to be announced in September?

July 6, 2009

East Renfrewshire Conservatives have given a cautious welcome to news that the Government has announced £1.25 billion to build approximately 55 new schools.
The Government also pledged that the first tranche of new schools to be built will be announced in September, with construction commencing in 2010.
The Education Secretary made clear that East Renfrewshire would “underpin the first announcements to be made in September.”
Commenting on the news Conservative & Unionist MSP for West of Scotland, Jackson Carlaw, said: “Parents, pupils and teachers waited in vain for a new Eastwood High for more than a decade under Labour, so this announcement must be welcomed as a long overdue source of encouragement.
“The clear implication of the Government’s announcement was that East Renfrewshire would be one of the first councils to benefit when further details are announced in September. That is my hope and expectation. I assume that a new Eastwood High would be the council’s top priority as, by its own estimations, its building is in the poorest condition.
“On this basis if the SNP Government and the Labour Council don’t announce plans for a new Eastwood High by September serious questions will have to be asked of both parties.”
Conservative Education Spokesman on East Renfrewshire Council, Cllr Charlie Gilbert, said: “I am delighted that, at long last, the Scottish Government has announced a new school building programme. I hope that September’s follow-up announcement incorporates my idea for a Community Hub, including a new Eastwood High, a new Crookfur Primary and a new nursery. The Hub would double up as an excellent and cost effective community facility. The SNP Finance Secretary has acknowledged this point to me previously, so I hope it can be rolled out as part of September’s announcement.”
