Sisters to run marathon for charity

September 3, 2009

nyc 051 (2)A NEWTON MEARNS lady will run with her sister in a world famous race this November.

Sisters Corin Ling and Lesley Love are in training for the New York City Marathon and they hope by completing the run their caring bid will raise as much cash as possible for East Renfrewshire Good Causes (ERGC).

Mum-of-two Corin, of Newton Mearns, and New York resident Lesley, a United Nations worker, will be competing in the 40th annual NY marathon on November 1. Those wishing to sponsor Corin & Lesley should visit http://www.justgiving.com/thesistersloverunning and type in “er good causes” as the charity.

ERGC is a charity which was set up in 2007 by Russell Macmillan as a way of “repaying his debt to society” after he underwent a pancreas and kidney transplant.

New Eastwood High school?

September 3, 2009

A new Eastwood High school building could be on its way very soon, according to a local MSP.
The SNP Government has announced £1.25 billion to build approximately 55 new schools. And they will be revealing which ones this month.
And in a letter to Jackson Carlaw MSP, Scottish Finance Secretary John Swinney wrote that East Renfrewshire Council “is one of the three local authorities that has been in the vanguard of working with the SFT (Scottish Futures Trust) to share best practice and design a common approach to the school buildings programme, and we expect that work will underpin the first announcements that we will make in September.”
Mr Carlaw added: “Parents, pupils and teachers waited in vain for a new Eastwood High for more than a decade under Labour, so this development is another long overdue source of encouragement.
“The clear implication of the Government’s initial announcement, and this latest letter from John Swinney, is that East Renfrewshire will be one of the first councils to benefit when further details about the school building programme is announced in September. That is my hope and expectation.”

Statues to standing stones

September 2, 2009

A fascinating insight into the past can be viewed in both Giffnock and Eaglesham this week.
The William Gemmell statue collection will be open to the public in Statue House, which is in the lane off 20 Montgomery Street in Eaglesham, between 11am and 4pm on Saturday.
Gemmell (1814-1891) was a joiner who lived his whole life in Eaglesham.
He taught himself sculpting and during his lifetime his work was exhibited and received critical acclaim. Only six of his life sized sculptures survive and can be viewed at Statue House. No booking is necessary for this event.
And on Thursday 3 September at 7.30pm archaeologist Derek Alexander will give an illustrated talk in Giffnock library on the archaeology of the old county of Renfrewshire, from pre-history to modern times. Booking is essential for this event.
To book a place or for more information about these events, contact heritage service staff on 0141 577 3872 or at localstudies@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk
